August 1st Celebration – (Swiss National Day)
2022-08-07 @ 14:00 – 18:00 EDT
We celebrate Swiss National Day (August 1st) to remember the founding of the Old Swiss Confederacy.
The rural communities of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden had agreed to this Federal Charter of 1291, which is considered the confederacy’s founding document, even though similar alliances are likely to have existed for decades earlier. [Wikipedia].
This year it’s been 731 years since this event, which is said to have occurred on the Rütli meadow, a hidden cove on Lake Luzern “sometime in August 1291”.
It is already a year since we celebrated the 1st of August. I can’t believe how time flies. This year we had to change venue due to Irma Shields’ poor health. This year we are going to have our celebration on August 7th, 2022 at:
The club will provide bratwurst, knockwurst, soft drinks, tableware, and wine. Please bring a side dish or dessert. Please let Therese Jochum know what you are bringing, and how many people from your family are coming. Therese needs to make sure that we have plenty of food without too many duplications. Please call her at 317-831-3566.
This year we need reservations to be sent with a cheque of $10.00 per person. At the door, the charge will be the same (we need to offset the cost due to lack of income from canceled festivals). Thank you for your understanding.
Near the church is a playground for the kids to play.
I have to report sad news. Steve Schurtter, a long-time member, passed away on the 23rd of June in Avon, IN. I have no details on the arrangements.
I hope to see all of you to celebrate the 731st anniversary of Switzerland.
With all my best,
Claude Desmeules
